Is the Operation Oprah Campaign making any headway? Oh, you betcha, kids. This is a fun item to report upon. Over the past year, I have kept tabs on her show, watching the incorporation of more and more episodes on alternative health, laying new roads for paradigms of thought about natural medicine. Dr. Oz, a rather unconventional, scrubs wearing MD, has acted as a major player for this integration of natural health care information. As the awareness of her show grows, her ability to make the revolutions in health care become more succinct, highlighting easy-to-do health care at the home…. In other words, she’s jumped onto the preventative medicine bandwagon, and she’s not sitting pretty at the back, she’s taken the reins.
February of this year, The Oprah Show had a segment entitled, Introduction to Acupuncture: Globalizing Medicine,
where Dr. Oz presented concepts about acupuncture and energy medicine. The small fish of it: Oprah gets an acupuncture treatment that is broadcasted to millions of viewers at home.
The bigger frying fish of it: millions of viewers tune in and get turned-on with concepts about energy medicine and acupuncture. Way cool. And Dr. Oz does not stop there, he has created a resource for what he calls Global Medicine, compiling the best health secrets from around the planet. Through this endeavour, he’s devised a comprehensive websource containing background information about mind-body connections, body therapies, and energetic therapies as well as a list of practitioners involved with these modalities. Yeah, super cool.
Later, in July, Dr. Oz introduces a veteran of the alternative medicine community, Dr. Julian Whitaker, MD. At first glance, you swear this gentleman stepped right out of a Normal Rockwell painting; he embodies the doctor of the 1950s, white lab coat and all. The information that Dr. Whitaker offers up is elegantly simplistic, check out his online resources for tips on health and medical therapies here . And if you wish to follow more closely with his revolutionary methods of transforming medicine and health care, check out his nonprofit pet project, the Whitaker Health Freedom Foundation (WHFF). His continued acts of benevolence would make C. Biscuit proud, and it can best be summed up with his statement:
I created the WHFF in order to defend your right to freedom of health and choice in the medical marketplace. Whenever the US government, state governments, or the pharmaceutical industry attempt to suppress the truth about alternative medical therapies and/or nutritional supplementation, we will vigorously oppose them and intervene on behalf of the American public.
Yeah, super-dooper cool.
And last, but certainly far from least was discovered by one of NCNM’s own, Vanessa Estevesa. It is a recent article published by Oprah’s online resource, MIND and BODY, which helps the average individual make mindful decisions as to how to keep fit and healthy physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. At first glance, this WebMD article sounds pretty much inline with Dr. Oz and his Globalization of Health program, and it is, but here’s the best part, a naturopathic doctor collaborated on the project! Laurie Steelsmith, ND, a well-read alumna from Bastyr University added her insight to the mix, accenting a few natural approaches to health care management. Awesome, the integration of natural medicine into mainstream is afoot! Can’t you just feel the tides a stirrin’?
Pretty cool…!

If only the world new about all of the natural remedies, that are not just for those little ailments. But, some natural remedies are even for major diseases. I am amazed at how close minded some cultures are to ancient natural medicine practices. I enjoyed your site, be back when i have more time..
Thanks for taking a look at the Helfgott Blog, JonnieO. Alas, you are right, the healing properties behind natural medicine extend far beyond the minor bumps and bruises. I would imagine that with all the dissatisfied patients out there, other options are being sought out… and it’s only a matter of time before “natural” medicine starts to make sense.
Your comments are apt and looking forward to your insight in the future. The more we talk about the inherent powers of ancient wisdom, the more likely we are to see it sitting in the medicine cabinet, or better yet, growing in our backyards!
Best, JonnieO,
Kimberly Ann
