Balneotherapy is the medical use of natural mineral waters, peloids (mudpacks), and gases for therapeutic purposes. Sometimes called spa therapy, Balneotherapy is used to alleviate diseases such as arthritis, asthma and other respiratory diseases, skin diseases, and digestive complaints, to mention just a few. Balneotherapy as a topic attracts 10,162 research papers in a Pub Med search and is an indication of its significance in medicine, particularly in Europe.
In European countries, Balneotherapy is included under public health plans. In fact, it is quite normal for people to travel to a health spa for 2 to 3 weeks of treatment, which is entirely or partially covered.
In Israel, famed for the Dead Sea and its high salt and mineral content, is a Middle Eastern country where Balneotherapy has a major presence in health promotion. The minerals of the Dead Sea account for many curative outcomes among those arriving from many countries. Extensive research on the medical properties of these waters increasingly attests not only to their therapeutic value, but also to their growing popularity among patients and physicians.
On October 27th, Dr. Shaul Sukenik, MD, a renowned Israeli scholar, will be visiting the campus of the National College of Natural Medicine (NCNM) and presenting a Grand Rounds on his research at 7:30 a.m. Dr. Sukenik will also address physicians, researchers and students about the remarkable trends in medical tourism later the same day at 7:00 pm.
Presently, Dr. Sukenik specializes in Internal Medicine and Rheumatogy at Israel’s largest hospital, the University Medical Center, Beer Sheva. He has over 180 research papers in his growing bibliography, and has recently published, The Dead Sea, the World’s Ultimate Health Resort.
You are cordially invited to both events, bookmarking an exceptional day of learning and collegiality at NCNM, America’s oldest accredited college of naturopathic medicine.
