An open letter to Dr. John Kitzhaber
Mister Kitzhaber,
I just had one of those profound moments—that stops you in your tracks—and your day cannot continue without taking a moment to write it all down. Health reform and the latest de-Dascheling of the DHHS have nearly everyone in a tizzy as to who should step up to the plate. It is my understanding that once again, you, Mister Kitzhaber, are up for the nomination of the Secretary of Health and Human Services for President Obama’s dream team.
This letter is not my intention to talk you into anything; you know best what is right for you, for your family, and for the movement of health care. Besides, if anyone realizes the utter mess that the US health care system is in, it’s you. Accepting such a lofty position with such high stakes, well, you couldn’t pay me a million dollars to sit it that cushy chair… so I completely understand if you wish to stay in Portland, Oregon, where the grass does grow greener and much cleaner than the streets of DC.
However, I still feel compelled to tell you, Mister Kitzhaber, that many people believe in the power poised behind you, regardless of your acceptance of the Obama dream team position as Secretary of Health and Human Services. You wield your strength wisely and we all are grateful that you are such a thoughtful leader. Your history as a physician, a politician, a humanitarian, and as a tree-hugging, salmon-loving devotee contains all the ingredients for a successful and hearty leader of our health care system.
Moreover, I whole-heartedly believe in your vision of an altruistic health care system: The Archimedes Movement. Symbolically, its name is fitting for such ill-fitting times. The determination running in your veins resonates with universal qualities, like the golden ratio or the trueness of solid gold, and reflects the same hidden grandeur of Archimedes’ lost – now found—calculus permutations. We are all in an age of remembrance, a time when only sincere, compassionate and subtle forces will succeed. You hold such qualities, Mister Kitzhaber, as do we… the quiet and surefooted… tending to the delicately interwoven grassrooted gardens… growing in our own backyards. The communities of our nation are comprised of individuals who all desire common goals: simplicity, (e)quality, respect, and health. As concerned citizens we have a voice and a desire to see these goals ring true.
Therefore, we are behind your Archimedes Movement mission, 100%, because we understand the nature and momentum building behind the appropriately placed levers of positive change within our health care system.
With that said, President Obama wishes to combine the interactive forces of legislation with those of community-based action, similar to how his presidential campaign deftly collected citizens to work odd hours, registering voters and amassing incremental donations. Obama possesses the potential to implement change, through precise plans and legislative process, in every neighborhood playing field. Pure Genius. Archimedes members, along with like-minded nonprofits and community organizations, could potentially be THE harbingers of good health. Portland, Oregon could be our nation’s model and could provide a shovel-ready example, worthy of a grand, national scale. Our passion, our commitment to true change cannot be shaken. Call us to action and we will help you provide the best health care system for present and future generations. We get it. For we are all in this together, seeking our own truths—and perhaps the “lock and key” to secrets that only the power of the present moment can reveal.
To me, your potential re-nomination signifies the importance you hold in various circles on Pennsylvania Avenue, and that this same significance holds true for all us down on Mainstreet, more broadly reaching than just your devoted Archimedes Movement crew.
In essence, your well-rounded and directive force is exactly what we need for our ailing health care system. As far as I’m concerned, you can accomplish your goals here… or there… or anywhere that you choose to implement change. The power of the internet is limitless and your thoughtful words can effortlessly reach the remotest corners of the globe, thanks in part to the citizens of the Archimedes Movement and beyond.
So at this moment I will ask you: what is it that you wish to do for health care? Whoever chooses to take on the role as our National Health Czar, may we all, as an empowered population, harness the proper tools of health for the benefit of not only ourselves, but for our children’s children and for the sake of Mother Earth.
Sincerely,
C. Biscuit
