The following letter is originally intended for, Bill Maher, a political comedian who doesn’t flinch when it comes to the mudslinging in our US legislative practices.

Kosher or not, Bill tells it like it is, unafraid to speak out about our inconsistencies in our government, literally cleaning “House” attempting to keep the management of our great nation… well, more manageable.

A satirical newspaper, entitled Naturally the News, was also created by in-house Helfgott Blog writers, taking the obvious and adding a bit of sass and humor to the current state of health care.

And to get our message into the mind of a gutsy go-getter, Lou’s letter and Naturally the News will be presented to Mr. Maher himself on July 12, 2008 at the Arlene Schnitzer Hall in Portland, Oregon, where Bill plans to take to the stage for his comedy tour.

We’d like you to peruse Naturally the News as well (just click the blue rabbit above to open). This red-top is worth a read, best remedy for a depressed system any day! And most of all: enjoy, we certainly did. Prepare to laugh, cry, and beg for more… the Helfgott Blog crew is at it again, making health happen, employing every strategy to get the word out, the work done, and a revolutionized health care system underway.

. … . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . . . .

Mr. Bill Maher,

You may be wondering, “What do these people want from me?” Don’t worry. We are not looking to be writers on your show. You talk about America’s lack of exercise and nutritious diet, excess use of pharmaceutical drugs, and effects of living in a polluted environment on your show. We wanted to let you know, in case you are not aware, there is a medical profession, Naturopathy, who agrees with you. When the subject comes up on your show we would like to be added to the discussion. Why Bill Maher? Because you have the balls to say it.

Naturopathic medicine is based upon the healing power of nature. Rather than suppress symptoms with drugs, naturopathic physicians find the cause and support the body by giving it what it needs to heal itself. We use sustainable affordable modalities such as nutrition (diet), exercise, drinking water, botanical medicine (Sorry Bill, we can’t write you a script for marijuana), hydrotherapy, vertebral manipulations, homeopathy, and the list goes on. Naturopathic physicians work with the sick, but also work with the healthy to keep them healthy, in other words, PREVENTION of illness. Naturopathy is a much more cost effective approach to health care.

The current approach to health care is failing and the current attempts at a universal health care plan will not come close to saving it. If the government directly funds “for profit” insurance companies, and creating health is not in their best interest, then this funding format is not going to change our faltering health. Drugs, don’t worry, I’m not talking about pot, are not helping the problem but propelling it. Prevention of disease through healthy diet and exercise will, which is why people need to know Naturopathic medicine is an option.

Naturopathy is nothing new. It has been around for hundreds of years. The advent of antibiotics and the pharmaceutical industry overshadowed natural medicine. Drugs took over the scene in the mid 20th century because they took away all responsibility. People could do whatever they wanted and the magic pill would make it all better.

People are slowly realizing the magic pill is not the cure all it was originally thought to be. Health problems are not getting better with drugs. Slowly, people are shifting back to the philosophy of natural medicine. Diet, exercise, and the quality of the environment impact health. Taking poison pills for eating poison, drinking poison, and breathing poison will not make poison related diseases go away.

This is not to say naturopathic medicine should be used in all instances and allopathic medicine should be banned. Allopathic medicine is definitely the approach of choice in certain situations, but it is not the first approach for all health issues, especially those chronic and slowly evolving forms. Also, naturopathy is not for everyone. Not everyone wants to change their diet for the better and exercise.

Additionally, not all naturopaths are created equal. Taking a correspondence course online and calling yourself a naturopath is not the same as going to an accredited institution. This is like buying hooked on phonics and calling yourself president. Knowing where your naturopathic doctor received their training should be part of the selection criteria. For the record, I am a naturopathic student in a four year accredited institution.

Like you, I love this country. I think it was great and can be great again, but it will take work. Please include naturopathic medicine in your discussions. Let the people who agree with you know they have an option in their approach to their health.

Rethinking Global Strategy

This letter was hand-delivered to Mr. Milken by an NCNM student, Alisha Moadab, who wanted to personally connect her thoughts on health care with several revolutionary minds at the 11th Annual Global Conference. A special round of thanks to Alisha for taking the world in her hands and making the voice of change heard at such an influential and international conference. That takes courage and determination. Thanks for believing in the bigger picture, Alisha, we’re behind your dreams 100%.

. … . .. . . .. … . . … . . . .. . . . .

Dear Mr. Mike Milken,

You have the globe, or rather our Mother Earth in your hands. Collectively we share the responsibility of creating what we want for our world. I ask you the “man who changed medicine” what is your vision for health care?

I am honored to present this globe to your at the 11th Annual Global Conference. The inside is filled with the doctors of tomorrows’ visions of health care from the National College of Natural Medicine.

Natural medicine is that the tipping point, we are the future yet simultaneously the founders of true-time tested medicine. Hippocrates, the Father of Medicine, stated:

Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.

Around the globe food is becoming a scarcity, and health care a privilege. Why is this happening?

I am here at the Global Conference to find out. I want to thank you for facilitating the discussions of such important and pressing issues that sustain our global existence. Everything is interconnected. To fix one of the world’s problems could have a ripple effect. It is distressing that the high oil costs have increased the price of food, or medicine rather, in honor of Hippocrates.

I hope that these visions of health care inspire you and feed your philanthropic spirit. May health, wealth, and happiness always be yours. Thank you for your leadership!

Sincerely,
Alisha Moadab
Naturopathic Medical Student

The Oprah Show Reigns Over Natural Forms of Medicine!

Is the Operation Oprah Campaign making any headway? Oh, you betcha, kids. This is a fun item to report upon. Over the past year, I have kept tabs on her show, watching the incorporation of more and more episodes on alternative health, laying new roads for paradigms of thought about natural medicine. Dr. Oz, a rather unconventional, scrubs wearing MD, has acted as a major player for this integration of natural health care information. As the awareness of her show grows, her ability to make the revolutions in health care become more succinct, highlighting easy-to-do health care at the home…. In other words, she’s jumped onto the preventative medicine bandwagon, and she’s not sitting pretty at the back, she’s taken the reins.

rock onFebruary of this year, The Oprah Show had a segment entitled, Introduction to Acupuncture: Globalizing Medicine, where Dr. Oz presented concepts about acupuncture and energy medicine. The small fish of it: Oprah gets an acupuncture treatment that is broadcasted to millions of viewers at home. The bigger frying fish of it: millions of viewers tune in and get turned-on with concepts about energy medicine and acupuncture. Way cool. And Dr. Oz does not stop there, he has created a resource for what he calls Global Medicine, compiling the best health secrets from around the planet. Through this endeavour, he’s devised a comprehensive websource containing background information about mind-body connections, body therapies, and energetic therapies as well as a list of practitioners involved with these modalities. Yeah, super cool.

Later, in July, Dr. Oz introduces a veteran of the alternative medicine community, Dr. Julian Whitaker, MD. At first glance, you swear this gentleman stepped right out of a Normal Rockwell painting; he embodies the doctor of the 1950s, white lab coat and all. The information that Dr. Whitaker offers up is elegantly simplistic, check out his online resources for tips on health and medical therapies here . And if you wish to follow more closely with his revolutionary methods of transforming medicine and health care, check out his nonprofit pet project, the Whitaker Health Freedom Foundation (WHFF). His continued acts of benevolence would make C. Biscuit proud, and it can best be summed up with his statement:

I created the WHFF in order to defend your right to freedom of health and choice in the medical marketplace. Whenever the US government, state governments, or the pharmaceutical industry attempt to suppress the truth about alternative medical therapies and/or nutritional supplementation, we will vigorously oppose them and intervene on behalf of the American public.

Yeah, super-dooper cool.

And last, but certainly far from least was discovered by one of NCNM’s own, Vanessa Estevesa. It is a recent article published by Oprah’s online resource, MIND and BODY, which helps the average individual make mindful decisions as to how to keep fit and healthy physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. At first glance, this WebMD article sounds pretty much inline with Dr. Oz and his Globalization of Health program, and it is, but here’s the best part, a naturopathic doctor collaborated on the project! Laurie Steelsmith, ND, a well-read alumna from Bastyr University added her insight to the mix, accenting a few natural approaches to health care management. Awesome, the integration of natural medicine into mainstream is afoot! Can’t you just feel the tides a stirrin’?

Pretty cool…!

Bill Maher Talks Health Care

Finally!

Bill Maher takes on the big hitters, check out this satirical commentary on “you tube.”

bill-maher.jpg

Now ask yourself:

Do the obvious holes in our healthcare system leave you wanting more?

Do you need a comical outlet to express your concerns about the current state of affairs in healthcare?

Do you wish to be a part of a strategy to bring awareness of Natural Medicine to the public through the political comedian Bill Maher?

Want to be part of the healthcare revolution?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above questions, then here’s your chance to make a difference! The plan is to write a satirical newspaper about the current state of health care (and lack there of), the environment, politics, and big pharma. The project is meant to be 100% fun and effective.

Contributors will be chosen based on sarcasm, wit, timing, and subject knowledge. You are, in fact, comedy’s A-team. Rather than assign articles/topics, you are encouraged to use your creative juices and see what you come up with.

Rough drafts due by Dec. 1, early submissions appreciated!

Dalai Lama?!

Dalai Lama

To come and speak

in Portland, Oregon?

Voicing his thoughts on a

sustainable infrastructure

involving health care…?

Sure, I’d love to help.

All I have to do

is fill out a postcard

sharing my thoughts

about how a dialogue with him

about medicine and healing

would benefit the next generation

of health practitioners and respective patients?

(which includes me!)

Dude!

What an opportunity to be heard

… and by the Dalai directly.

Count– me— in—- !

Well, heck, I’ll give my two cents.

Oh, I can donate 30 cents for postage? No biggie.

That’s a small sacrifice for such a grand cause.

:-) Thanks
