Multimedia Shifting Public Awareness

threading-a-movieArtful media forms its foundation using sticky stories, characterizing people or ideas which seek renovation, a deliberate shift in consciousness. Any good piece of art takes an intangible, gives it material form, manipulates it, and then releases it, thereby casting a sensuous spell. This is fundamental to storytelling. Moreover, that’s also the root of  shamanism, so, not surprisingly, a well placed story is one of the most powerful traditional healing methods out there. Directors and musicians do it all the time, and it’s rather fun… image the impact you can have on a huge number of people with a one to two hours of narration? Still not convinced? Well if you sit and watch these documentaries you’re sure to go into a dark setting, get awash under a spell, and leave transformed.

Poor Magazine “is a multi-media access project of POOR Magazine, dedicated to reframing the news, issues and solutions from low and no income communities, as well as providing society with a perspective usually not heard or seen within the mainstream media.”

Health Money and Fear: A film about our health care system “is an educational tool that is being used by health reform advocates around the county who want the same thing: a health care system that delivers the most health we can get for the unbelievable amount of precious resources we are spending on it.”

The Community Health Project “sprouted as a grass roots venue for us all to creatively share experiences and opinions about health and health care. Our mission is to create a forum for expression and means to education.”

Sick Around the World is FRONTLINE’s and PBS’s visual description of what the current state of international health care is like… and where the US measures up in the grand scope of global health. It’s a little disturbing, but a must-see for anyone that wants to be informed.

OPB’s documentary series Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making Us Sick? is a worthy visual representation of what social factors are undermining our attempts to create an equitable health care system.
